Oesophageal veins (lower third)

The submucosal and peri-oesophageal veins of the lower third of the oesophagus and cardia drain downward into the left gastric vein (portal), while those of the upper two-thirds drain into the azygos and hemiazygos veins (systemic). The two territories communicate freely in the submucosa, forming the portal limb of the oesophageal portosystemic anastomosis.
