Short gastric and left gastro-omental veins

Four or five short gastric veins drain the fundus and upper greater curvature through the gastrosplenic ligament into the splenic vein or its hilar tributaries; the left gastro-omental (gastroepiploic) vein drains the greater curvature along the gastrocolic ligament into the splenic vein. Both accompany the corresponding branches of the splenic artery and communicate along the greater curve with the right gastro-omental vein.

When it goes wrong
Splenic vein occlusion by pancreatitis or a pancreatic tail carcinoma
Splenic blood escapes through the short gastric veins into the gastric wall and on to the left gastric vein, producing isolated gastric fundal varices with a normal liver (sinistral portal hypertension)
