- NaCl passively (fluid arriving is ~1200 mOsm/kg and NaCl-rich while the surrounding interstitium is urea-rich)

- Impermeable to water; permeable to NaCl and moderately to urea
- Mechanism
- Urea deposited in the inner medulla by the collecting duct draws NaCl out here, adding salt to the deepest interstitium without spending ATP
