Instructions

You are a medical student on placement in general practice. Your next patient is Mei Chen, 29, back for the result of a pelvic ultrasound that another GP arranged for an ache low in her tummy.

  1. Take a focused history

  2. Explain the diagnosis and your management plan to the patient

  • You do not need to examine the patient
  • You do not need to summarise your findings to the examiner

Pelvic ultrasound report (last week)

Left ovary: 60 x 52 x 47 mm cyst; echogenic nodule with acoustic shadowing, echogenic lines, fat-fluid level; no internal blood flow. Typical of a mature cystic teratoma (dermoid cyst); O-RADS 2, almost certainly benign. Right ovary and uterus normal; no free fluid. Clinical correlation advised.
