Station - Instructions for candidate
You are a final-year medical student on placement at a general practice in Armadale.
Jake Torrens, a 29-year-old plasterer, has booked in for a repeat script for his blue asthma puffer. The practice nurse mentions that he asked for two puffers because 'one doesn't last him the month'.
| Practice record | Asthma diagnosed age 8. Only medication on file: salbutamol 100 microgram pressurised inhaler, 200 microgram as needed. Last seen 14 months ago for a repeat script. Emergency Department discharge summary on file from July last year: 'acute asthma, treated with nebulised salbutamol and prednisolone 50 mg for 5 days, discharged, GP follow-up advised'. Smoker. Peak flow today 430 L/min (predicted 620). |

- Take a focused history.
- Explain the problem to Jake and counsel him about his treatment.
- Discuss your management plan with Jake.
- A placebo inhaler device is available for demonstration.
- You do NOT need to examine the patient.
