Instructions

You are a medical student on placement in the emergency department. Your next patient is My Le, 81, who lives alone and takes apixaban for atrial fibrillation. Last night she slipped getting out of the bath and fell against its edge; she did not black out. She now has pain in the left side of her chest.

  1. Perform a respiratory examination

  2. Outline to the examiner:

    • Your most likely diagnosis and differentials
    • Next steps in management, including relevant investigations
  • You do not need to take a further history
  • You do not need to summarise your findings
  • Please verbalise your examination; findings will be provided on request

ChoiceHub writes these stations itself, from the ground up, across a wide range of clinical topics. They are not official exam material, and no university has written, reviewed or endorsed them. “Recommended for” only suggests the year and exam format a station suits.
