Instructions

You are an intern on a surgical ward. Reginald Ashworth, 81, was admitted two days ago unable to pass urine. A catheter drained 1100 mL. His kidney function is normal. He started tamsulosin and is going home today with the catheter until a trial without it in two weeks.

  1. Explain catheter care and the management plan to Mr Ashworth

  • You do not need to take a history or examine the patient
  • A leg bag and a night bag are on the table

ChoiceHub writes these stations itself, from the ground up, across a wide range of clinical topics. They are not official exam material, and no university has written, reviewed or endorsed them. “Recommended for” only suggests the year and exam format a station suits.
