Instructions

You are an intern in the emergency department at Hedland Health Campus. Chol Atem, 24, a labourer at a Pilbara mine, collapsed at the end of a long shift outdoors and is confused and agitated.

  1. Assess and manage the patient using an A to E approach

  2. Outline to the examiner:

    • Your most likely diagnosis
    • Next steps in management, including relevant investigations
  • A nurse is at the bedside and will carry out your instructions; describe procedures rather than doing them
  • You do not need to take a full history
  • You do not need to summarise your findings

Treatment before arrival

18-gauge cannula in the left forearm; 1 L of sodium chloride 0.9% IV during the 40-minute drive; nothing else given
