Station - Instructions for candidate
You are a final-year medical student on placement in a general practice in Perth.
Carmela Caruso, a 21-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes, has booked a GP review after she passed out at the gym last week. She came in on her own and would like to work out why it happened and how to stop it happening again.
Your tasks are to:
- Take a focused history of the episode and the circumstances around it.
- Counsel her about recognising and treating low blood glucose, and about adjusting insulin and carbohydrate around exercise.
- Explain the driving rules that apply to her, and agree a written plan with follow-up and referral.
- You do NOT need to summarise your findings to the examiner.
- You are not required to examine the patient.
- You do NOT need to request or interpret any investigations.
- You are not expected to write a prescription in this station; you may discuss any insulin changes verbally.
This is a 10-minute station, with 2 minutes of reading time.
