Instructions

You are a medical student on placement in general practice. Your next patient is Joel Bautista, 17, a first-year apprentice hairdresser, presenting with a lump in the front of his neck.

  1. Perform a full examination.

  2. Outline to the examiner:

    • Your findings
    • Your most likely diagnosis and differentials
  • You do not need to take a further history
  • Please verbalise your examination; findings will be given as you examine
  • The examiner will ask you questions at the end

History taken by the GP today

Noticed the lump two months ago when it swelled during a sore throat; a little smaller since and never painful. No change in his voice, no trouble swallowing or breathing, no weight loss or night sweats, no heat intolerance, shakiness or tiredness. Otherwise well; no medicines.
