Instructions

You are an intern in the emergency department. Alicia Mendes, 30, is 9 weeks pregnant with her first pregnancy and came in with light bleeding. She has just had an ultrasound and does not know the result. She came alone. The report is printed for you.

  1. Take a focused history from Ms Mendes

  2. Explain the scan result to Ms Mendes and the management plan

  • You do not need to examine the patient; her observations are normal

Ultrasound report

Intrauterine sac; embryo CRL 20 mm; no fetal heart activity. Adnexa normal; no free fluid. Consistent with missed miscarriage.

ChoiceHub writes these stations itself, from the ground up, across a wide range of clinical topics. They are not official exam material, and no university has written, reviewed or endorsed them. “Recommended for” only suggests the year and exam format a station suits.
