Station - Instructions for candidate

You are a junior doctor working in a general practice in Perth.

Arjun Singh, a 24-year-old retail assistant, has booked an urgent appointment because his right eye has been painful, red and watering for two days and his vision in it is blurred. He wears contact lenses. A Snellen chart, pinhole, pen torch, fluorescein strips and a blue light are available. The practice does not have a slit lamp.

Observations (practice nurse)Temperature 36.8 degrees C, heart rate 80 /min. Nurse note: right eye red and watering, patient wearing sunglasses in the waiting room.

Your tasks are to:

  1. Take a focused history.
  2. Perform a focused examination of the eyes, including visual acuity, inspection, fluorescein staining and the pupils. Verbalise each step to the examiner and the findings will be provided.
  3. State your most likely diagnosis and the differential diagnoses to the examiner.
  4. Explain your initial management to the patient.
  • You do NOT need to summarise your findings to the examiner.
  • Please verbalise your examination to the examiner.
  • You do not need to write a referral letter in this station.
