Instructions

You are an intern on the surgical ward. The nurse has called you at 7 am to see Weiming Tang, 68, on day 5 after keyhole bowel surgery for rectal cancer, because he is sweaty and his pulse is fast; the surgical registrar is in theatre and can be phoned.

  1. Assess and manage the patient using an A to E approach

  2. Outline to the examiner:

    • Your most likely diagnosis and differentials
    • Next steps in management, including relevant investigations
  • A nurse will carry out your instructions; findings are given as you examine or ask for them
  • You do not need to take a full history
  • You do NOT need to summarise your findings to the examiner
