Instructions

You are an intern in the emergency department. Brett Halliday, 46, has had three days of toothache and, since this morning, a swollen jaw and trouble swallowing his saliva, and the triage nurse has asked you to see him urgently in the resuscitation bay.

  1. Assess and manage the patient using an A to E approach

  2. Outline to the examiner:

    • Your most likely diagnosis
    • Next steps in management, including relevant investigations
  • A nurse at the bedside carries out your instructions. Talk the examiner through your findings and actions as you go.
  • You do not need to take a full history
  • You do not need to summarise your findings

Triage observations at 10.15 am
