Instructions

You are a medical student on placement in the emergency department. Your next patient is Salvatore Caruso, aged 9, brought in by his father with two days of tummy pain and a fever.

  1. Take a focused history from his father

  2. Examine the child

  3. Outline to the examiner:

    • Your most likely diagnosis and differentials
    • Next steps in management, including relevant investigations
  • You do not need to summarise your findings
  • Please verbalise your examination; findings will be provided on request
  • Salvatore is in the room; the examiner answers for him if you speak to him

ChoiceHub writes these stations itself, from the ground up, across a wide range of clinical topics. They are not official exam material, and no university has written, reviewed or endorsed them. “Recommended for” only suggests the year and exam format a station suits.
