Arises from the anterolateral wall of the left main bronchus below the left pulmonary artery (hyparterial) and divides into an upper division, homologous with the right upper lobe, and a lingular division, homologous with the right middle lobe.

When it goes wrong

Left upper lobe collapse from a central carcinoma

Veil-like haze over the left hemithorax with a preserved aortic knuckle, and the Luftsichel sign from the hyperinflated superior segment of the lower lobe curling around the arch

Lingular consolidation or collapse

Loss of the left heart border silhouette on the PA film
