Anterior spinothalamic tract (crude touch and pressure)
Second-order tract · detail · contralateral crude touch
Second-order fibres for crude (non-discriminative) touch and pressure cross in the anterior white commissure and ascend in the anterior funiculus, merging with the lateral tract in the brainstem. Because light touch travels in both the dorsal column and this tract, touch is rarely abolished by a single tract lesion.
Traced from the start
- Nociceptors and thermoreceptors (free nerve endings)
- Dorsolateral tract of Lissauer and dorsal horn synapse (Rexed laminae I, II and V)
- Anterior (ventral) white commissure
- Anterior spinothalamic tract (crude touch and pressure)
Detail
- Modality
- Crude touch and pressure
- Position
- Anterior funiculus
When it goes wrong
Isolated dorsal column lesion
Light touch is preserved while vibration, joint position sense and two-point discrimination are lost
