Upper lumbar branches (L1–L2)

L1 (often with a T12 twig) divides inside psoas into an upper branch, which splits into the iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves, and a lower branch that unites with a twig from L2 as the genitofemoral nerve. These are the border nerves of the abdominal wall and groin.
