A 38-year-old woman presents with two weeks of pain in the front of her neck radiating to her jaw, together with palpitations, sweating and 2 kg of weight loss. About three weeks earlier she had a sore throat and muscle aches that settled without treatment. Her pulse is 104/min; the thyroid is diffusely enlarged, firm and markedly tender to palpation, and there are no eye signs.
