A 58-year-old man with a 3-year history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) undergoes an upper endoscopy for ongoing reflux symptoms. Endoscopy reveals a 4 cm segment of salmon-coloured mucosa above the gastroesophageal junction. Biopsies confirm the presence of non-dysplastic intestinal metaplasia with goblet cells. He is asymptomatic on omeprazole 20 mg daily. He has no significant comorbidities.
