A 5-month-old boy is brought to the emergency department by his parents because he has been unsettled overnight. He is well grown, afebrile and feeding normally. On undressing him you find a 2 cm bruise over the left ear and a smaller bruise on the left cheek. He is not yet rolling over. His father says the baby must have rolled off the couch onto a toy the previous afternoon. There are no other marks and the rest of the examination is normal.
