A 22-year-old man is brought in 20 minutes after eating a satay skewer at a food van. On arrival he had widespread welts, audible wheeze and a blood pressure of 76/44 mmHg, and adrenaline 0.5 mg was given intramuscularly into the mid-anterolateral thigh six minutes ago. He now feels much better: the wheeze has settled, blood pressure is 106/64 mmHg, pulse 96 beats per minute and oxygen saturation 98% on room air. He is sitting upright on the trolley, says he feels embarrassed, and asks when he can go home. Which one of the following should be done first?
