A 79-year-old man was prescribed temazepam 10 mg at night when his wife died four months ago, to help him sleep for a few nights. He has taken it every night since. He now sleeps reasonably, his mood has lifted and he has returned to his golf club, but he has fallen twice in the past month, once striking his head, and his daughter says he is unsteady in the mornings and repeats himself. Neurological examination is normal and he takes no other sedating medicines. Which one of the following should the general practitioner do now?
