A 45-year-old man wakes to find the left side of his face drooping. When he tries to raise his eyebrows only the right side moves, and he cannot fully close his left eye. He noticed that food tasted "metallic" yesterday and that sounds seemed too loud in his left ear. He has no limb weakness, no rash, no vesicles in the ear canal or on the palate, and no other cranial nerve findings. His blood pressure is 132/82 mmHg. He has no diabetes. He presents within 24 hours of onset.
