An 18-month-old boy is brought by his parents because he has no words. He walked at 13 months and runs and climbs well. He does not point to show things, does not wave, and does not look up when his name is called, although he startles to a door slamming. He lines his toy cars up and becomes very distressed if they are moved. He does not bring things to show his parents. He was born at term, passed the newborn hearing screen, and has had recurrent ear infections. His older sister developed normally.
