A 28-year-old man jumped from a first-floor window to escape a house fire and has blistered burns over about 30% of his body surface. Forty-five minutes after the fire he is alert and orientated. Blood pressure 84/48 mmHg, pulse 132/min, oxygen saturation 98% on air. His voice is normal, there is no soot in his mouth and his eyebrows are intact. The abdomen is distended and tender in the left upper quadrant. The burns have been cooled and covered, he is wrapped to keep him warm, and two cannulas are in place. Which one of the following should be done next?
