A 78-year-old woman is three days after a hemiarthroplasty for a fractured neck of femur. The night nurse reports that she was pulling at her drip at 2 am and calling for her late husband, but by the ward round she is settled and conversing normally. Asked to say the months of the year backwards she loses her place twice and drifts off mid-sentence. Her daughter says her memory was entirely normal before admission.
