A 22-year-old apprentice is brought to a regional emergency department by friends at 11 pm after telling them he wanted to die. Six hours later his breath alcohol reading is zero. He is calm, coherent and embarrassed, says he had been drinking and does not want to die, and has no depressive symptoms on assessment and no psychiatric history. His father took his own life.
