A 24-year-old man is brought to the emergency department at 2 am by police. He has been using methamphetamine for three days, and is pacing, sweating and shouting that the staff are recording him. Pulse is 122/minute, blood pressure 158/94 mmHg, temperature 37.6°C, and his pupils are 7 mm. He has no injuries and takes no regular medicines. After a nurse offers him a cold drink and a quiet cubicle he settles enough to say he will swallow a tablet if it will help him sleep. Which one of the following should you give him now?
