A 34-year-old swimmer has had increasing right ear pain for three days. Moving the pinna and pressing the tragus markedly worsen the pain, and the external canal is swollen with purulent debris. He is afebrile, systemically well and has no mastoid tenderness. The canal is too narrowed for drops to pass reliably. What is the most appropriate management?
