A 72-year-old woman presents with three weeks of a new, persistent right-sided headache. Brushing her hair on that side has become painful, and her jaw begins to ache after a minute of chewing steak so that she has to stop and rest. Her shoulders and hips have been stiff in the mornings for two months. This morning she lost the vision in her right eye completely for about five minutes before it returned. Her erythrocyte sedimentation rate is 94 mm/h and C-reactive protein 71 mg/L. Visual acuity is currently normal in both eyes.
